Harold John Goodwin

Managing Director Responsible Toursm Partnership

Harold Goodwin is a Professor Emeritus and Senior Fellow in the Institute of Place Management at Manchester Metropolitan University and Managing Director of the Responsible Tourism Partnership. He drafted the Cape Town Declaration on Responsible Tourism in Destinations agreed at a side event to the WSSD in Johannesburg in 2002 Drawing on two decades of experience in implementing Responsible Tourism he wrote the 2022 Responsible Tourism Charter was signed on Magna Carta Island last November.

Responsible tourism is about using tourism to make better places for people to live in recognising that great places to live are great places to visit.

Harold has worked on tourism and conservation and pro-poor tourism. More recently he has been applying Porter’s thinking on creating shared value to benefit communities and on destination management where much of his work has been on managing tourism to avoid or mitigate the consequences for hosts and guests of overtourism.
